The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has announced its 2012 Fall All-Academic Selections. Among those honored was Middlebury College distance runner Patrick Hebble (Sudbury, Mass.) To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35.
Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) of the women’s basketball team is featured in this week's Service Credit Union Student-Athlete Spotlight. Elizabeth, a freshman guard, made her second career start against Cornell University and recorded her first double-double with 11 points and team-high 11 rebounds – both personal bests, as was the 36 minutes of action – to help the UNH women’s basketball team record a 59-56 victory on Nov. 25. Elizabeth helped secure the win in the closing minute. With New Hampshire leading 57-56 and 11 seconds remaining, she pulled down an offensive rebound when a teammate missed the front end of a 1-and-1 from the foul line. That continued possession set up a pair of free throws by Cari Reed that extended the lead to three points. The 5-foot-10 guard recorded eight points and three rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench in her collegiate debut, the Nov. 14 season-opening 57-51 victory at Yale University. In four games this season, Elizabeth is averaging 6.8 points and 5.3 rebounds, which ranks third on the team. She is also third in both assists and field goals attempted, and is averaging 25.5 minutes per game.
