Acton Pilot Involved in Plane Crash Thursday

A pilot suffered minor injuries after her plane flipped over at Lawrence Airport.

A small airplane and details are starting to emerge.

Shortly before 7 p.m., North Andover police received a report a plane had crashed and overturned at the end of runway 32 at Lawrence Municipal Airport. A second plane, flown by an instructor, landed shortly afterward and assisted Police Sgt. Tim McEvoy in helping the injured pilot and shutting down the airport.

The pilot has been identified as Rebecca Harvey, 49, of Acton. She suffered minor injuries and is said to have about 20 years of pilot experience.

State Police are investigating the accident with the assistance of the State Police Air Wing Section, the Massachusetts Aeronautical Agency, the Federal Aviation Administration and the North Andover Police and Fire Departments.

"Preliminary investigation by Troopers Elkin Arrendondo (Air Wing) and Paul Lagone (Andover Barracks) indicates that a green, white and brown 1976 Grumman American, bearing tail number N1608R was conducting landing/take off drills when she experienced difficulty and crashed at the end of the runway," The Massachusetts State Police said in a statement Thursday night.

Harvey was reportedly conscious after the accident and able to walk to an ambulance on the scene. She was provided medical assistance at the scene and declined additional medical attention.

The aircraft is now in a hangar for further investigation.
