1. FORECAST: Today — Rain, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Patchy fog before 2pm. High near 65. East wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible; Tonight — Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 3am, then rain likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog after 9pm. Low around 56.

2. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Grab your umbrellas if you're planning on heading to the gridiron. Tonight's games include Lincoln-Sudbury playing host to Boston Latin while Acton-Boxborough takes on visiting Concord-Carlisle.

3. SWEET REASON TO CELEBRATE: Today is Sweetest Day, a holiday celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes region, and in parts of the Northeast and the Great Lakes Region, on the third Saturday in October.It is described by Retail Confectioners International as an "occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember the sick, aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed."Sweetest Day has also been referred to as a "concocted promotion" created by the candy industry solely to increase sales of sweets.

4. THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1960 — The United States imposes a partial embargo on goods exported to Cuba; 1983 — The Senate passed a bill (78–22) making Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a public holiday; 1987 — The stock market crashed on what came to be known as "Black Monday." Stocks dropped a record 508 points, or 22.6 percent, topping the drops on Oct. 28 and 29 in 1929 that ushered in the Great Depression.
