Young Acton Thieves Use Stolen Credit Card for X-Box, PlayStation & Food
The following information was supplied by the Concord District Court. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.
On Tuesday, June 19, Max Comjean, 18, of 3 Deacon Hunt Drive, Acton, and John Williams, 21, of 47 Drummer Road, Acton, were arrested and charged with:
- Larceny under $250
- Larceny over $250
- Receiving stolen property (credit card)
- Improper use of credit card
...here's why:
Max and John were caught red-handed using the stolen credit card at Kmart on Tuesday. Here is what is a bit crazy and courageous – The man who's credit card was stolen was notified by American Express that his card was being used at Kmart and decided to take action in his own hands, literally. Instead of informing the police, Michael Plate rushed to Kmart and grabbed his credit card right from the hands of John Williams.
How was the card stolen?
According to Plate, his wife's car was broken into the previous night and the card was stolen, along with several other items.
When police arrived at the scene scene they witnessed a young man with a bloody nose running from Kmart employees. Williams was grabbed by a Kmart employee and was later spoken to by an officer.
What was purchased on the card at Kmart?
According to the Kmart employee, John Martin, a Sony PS Vita handheld PlayStation was purchased for $318.74. Then, an X-Box 360 was purchased for $317.48 (the one-year warranty was purchased as well). The officer identified the credit card number on the receipts matching Mr. Plate's credit card.
It was then when Williams was arrested along with Max Comjean, who was later found at the scene.
More was purchased on the card:
It was discovered that Williams and Comjean used the stolen credit card at Julie's Place for two separate charges of $50.00 and $24.40. A gift card for $25.00 was also purchased at CVS on Massachusetts Avenue. A $25.00 purchase was made at Chipotle and a $100.00 purchase was made at Best Buy.
But we didn't actually steal the credit card:
According to an officer on scene, Comjean said that he received the credit card from Miles Hartling, of 32 Jackson Drive, Acton, who stole it from a car the previous night.
In hindsight:
1. Don't leave credit cards or money in your car.
2. Although brave, maybe it's best to call the police before confronting a criminal.
3. American Express is Johnny-on-the-spot with identifying improper uses of your stolen credit card.

The victim of the crime is more dangerous than the criminals? Because he did what any red blooded American would do, to get his own card back? Puhleeze.
And if the police are busy elsewhere, he should just stand passively by as punks rack up a debt on his card? We should abrogate our societal obligations to a distant beaurocracy while the crime is going on right in front of us?

Mr. Fleming - No more debt would have been racked up. As clearly stated in the article, American Express was well aware of what was happening and would not have held Mr. Plate accountable for any of those illegal charges. Maybe we should harken back to the wild west days of Oklahoma, because you sure spell "beaurocracy" and "DEFINITLY" like an Okie.... YeeHaw!

Mr. Fleming - I have plenty of substance for a response, but was unsure if it could be understood. Since you are capable of spelling "gelatinous blob" and suggested that it is a part of my make up, I would say you sir, that you threw out the first attempt of a disparaging comment. So, I suppose I can continue. Do you really believe that a credit card that has been reported stolen and that the issuing company has put on hold is worth risking your life for? Do you believe that someone capable of breaking and entering is incapable of possessing a weapon? Maybe even a six-shooter such as BillyBob has? So due to your arrogance and pride, I am stuck with the tax dollars of cleaning your body up off of the curb. Let the professionals do their job and quit trying to be a cowboy...

This reminds me of one time when one of those crazy personal injury lawyers contacted me when I fell off my horse, Gaffle, when I was riding down the street and Gaffle steps in a sink-hole. I didn't even ask him to get involved and he already started yelling at the town like you guys are doing.

Update on the Xbox 360. I didn't get it. I took Gaffle for a walk down to 252 Main St, but there is no Kmart there. Maybe they moved since this article was written. It looked like a house, but I walked up to the door anyway. The old man there started yelling when Gaffle has to relieve himself on the lawn. I think it was a house.
Maybe I live in a different town than where this Kmart is. The address doesn't say a town, so I assumed it was my town of Maynard. Dang it.

Michael Fleming is right. Criminals EXPECT us to not fight back. If they believe we can and will hurt them if they attack then they will not attack.
It's called deterrence, and it works.
Mr. Fleming is also right about the remarks about Oklahoma. It is an increasingly common tactic to attack the speaker when you can't win an argument on merit. To say that someone is from Oklahoma or any other mid-western or southern state is to imply that said person is an inbred hillbilly lacking in intelligence, education, and teeth. Regionalism is the new, politically correct ism, replacing racism, sexism, etc. But attacking a person from where they are from makes about as much sense as attacking them for the color of their skin.

Passive dependence on letting someone else do what citizens did routinely allows is to get physically and morally lazy. No I don't believe in vigilantism, the police are the right department for most incidents, and they are on OUR side, but let's face it, they can't be everywhere, and their response time is a major factor in catching such crooks at all...
I will defend my home and my property whenever possible in a very personal manner, and I hope others would do the same thing, depending on your abilities of course.
And Jeff, you sir are correct in this trend that I see all too often. Unable to mount a cogent rebuttal, ad hominum attacks seem to be replacing logic, facts or critical thought as johhnie did. (misspelled on purpose) it is the new "ism", brought on by the same thing that all the other isms were spawned from: a sense of superiority. Whites thought themselves superior to blacks, men thought themselves superior to women, bullies feel superior to the weak or frail. Regionalism is the same kind of hatred that was brewed in the cauldron the others were cooked.

Police and credit card companies should make some policies, so that they can detect or trace the thieves when they steal the credit cards from users bad and wallet, the security system must be very strong so that thieve can never withdrawal the money from the credit cards.
