Woods Plaza businesses (intersection of Rts 27 and 119/2A) have figured a way to encourage the Acton community to shop local which will help benefit local organizations. Starting in October, nine professional business owners from Woods Plaza decided to donate a certain percentage of revenues to local charitable organizations one Thursday of each month. In October, the group donated to the Healing Garden. In November, the group donated to Loaves & Fishes and this month it is the Acton Discovery Museums. On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the Acton-Boxborough student organization, Green Council, decided to go through the school cafeteria's trash and audit the school's consumption of waste. What they came to find was that many things that could be recycled were thrown in the trash. According to a statement from the Acton-Boxborough Green Council, "The Resource Team is the subgroup working on this effort, with an ultimate goal of harvesting the compostable and recyclable materials currently being disposed of in the trash." A mound of granite blocks in a former Acton quarry is being transformed into a mass of figurative sculptures. Accomplished with great skill and deep thought, this collaborative work is one of many projects underway at the Contemporary Arts International (CAI), founded in 1999 and launched in 2010. CAI president/director Yin Peet and artistic director Viktor Lois (pronounced Loys), both sculptors, share a vision for the CAI. Construction is well underway at Sarah Jane Court. Where and what is Sarah Jane Court? Across the street from Not Your Average Joe’s is the site where a 6 unit townhome is being constructed. Acton Home Development is the project's developer and Marianne Blackstone Tabner is the listing broker. According to Tabner, the homes will be hitting the market in December. One of the most active Acton bands is facing growing pains – nothing No Soap Radio won’t be able to stretch back into shape. On July 29, Acton 9/11 Memorial Fund Committee members, Tom Matthews and Eva Szkaradek, took a trip to Rock of Ages, a quarry in Barre Vermont, to retrieve a slab of granite to use for the base of the new 9/11 memorial. Matthews and Szkaradek received a tour of the facility and watched their slab of granite get shaped. One piece of granite is called berry granite, which comes from Vermont, but another piece that will be used in the memorial is black granite that came from Pennsylvania.
