AB School votes new budget number

The Acton-Boxborough Regional School Committee revoted its FY2015 budget last night (2/12/14) which resulted in a 2.6% budget increase, down from the 3.8% voted last week. The reduction will mean Acton's school assessment, if approved by Town Meeting, will be about $49.8 million, an increase of $2.3 million or a 4.7% increase over last year's combined school cost.

Boxborough assessment is estimated to decrease by 6% next year. Their assessment will be $10.6 million, down $700,000.

The School Committee also unanimously approved the new contract for incoming Superintendent Glenn Brand. His contract calls for a starting salary of $180,000, with a 3% increase in the second year and a 4% increase in the third. The school assessments, which must be approved by both towns' Town Meetings in April (Acton) and May (Boxborough), are calculated using the regional formula which is based on enrollment, plus an additional offset in favor of Acton, which helps shift some additional savings to Acton. As a result, Acton's assessment is going up less than it would have without the offset. But the combination of enrollment shift plus offset is resulting in Acton's assessment about 2% higher than the budget, while Boxborough's assessment is almost 10% lower....
