AB Schools Regionalization Recap

As my regular readers know, Acton is going to be facing some unique fiscal challenges over the next few years, which are being created in part by our decision to fully regionalize our schools with Boxborough. Some of the dangers were discussed at a recent Acton Leadership Group (ALG) meeting by the Finance Committee members. While most people seem to recognize that there are issues, no one seems to know yet the scope. It could take a couple of years for things to become clearer. In the meantime, the town may end up using much of its reserve funds because its annual budgets are not in balance (we are using $2 million of reserves per year) and things could get worse.

Several people have emailed me with questions about all of the recent issues regarding regionalization. There is no question what has happened has been confusing. Many of our town and school leaders also seem confused, especially those who keep repeating how Acton taxpayers have saved a million dollars due to regionalization. Or perhaps they are just in denial.

So I've decided to do a recap on the whole regionalization issue....
