Acton schools mislead on PR effort

The School Committee and some school Parent-Teacher Organizations (PTOs) are in overdrive on a coordinated campaign to mislead the public about the school budget and Acton's assessment.

The school's latest PR campaign is happening in the Beacon, in PTO emails to parents, and on the school website. The goal of this is to whip parents into a frenzy over red herrings like "cuts in service" or "difficult cuts" to the budget, when in fact the budget is increasing rapidly. Much of the increase is being hidden by all the savings due to regionalization and declining student enrollment. Without those savings, the school budget would probably be going up 5-6%.

The reason the Board of Selectmen seemed to be against the school assessment was that there were too many additions in a difficult year. The BOS was also sensitized by an unexpected $900,000 in additional costs that the town is incurring on behalf of the schools....
