Boxborough Wins; Acton Loses

At last night's Regional School Committee meeting (Feb. 6, 2014), which was the official budget hearing required by state law, the School Committee approved their FY 2014-2015 budget of $76.9 million, which represents an increase of 3.8% over the combined school budgets from last year.

The budget increase is modest by historic standards but is about twice the rate of growth over the last five years. The budget includes higher anticipated costs for SPED services, a 10% increase in healthcare costs, and the realignment of about six positions from Boxborough's Blanchard school to the newly expanded regional school. It also includes four permanently reduced positions because of regionalization efficiencies and an additional $600,000 in state transportation aid.

However, taxpayers in the two towns are given an assessment to pay for school spending. The Boxborough assessment is estimated to be $10.7 million, or a decrease from their FY14 assessment of $570,000 or about 5% less.
