Obituary- Sarah "Sally" M. O'Conor

Sarah “Sally” M. O’Conor, died in Acton on January 28. She was the beloved wife of the late John C. O’Conor, Sr., Mother of John C. O’Conor, Jr., and Carolyn (Lyn) S. O’Conor-Ferguson and her husband Stuart G. Ferguson.

Born in Baltimore, MD, she grew up in Mount Washington and graduated from Mt. St. Agnes High School and The College of Notre Dame of Maryland. During World War II Sally volunteered with the American Red Cross and, while in college, she worked as a swimming instructor. Following college, Sally tried several professions, including social work in Baltimore, but found that her true interest lay in what was then called “Outside Sales.” Sally was a fearless trailblazer in an industry that had few women at that time. Sally prided herself on selling only products she believed in, including some of the first appliances for homemakers such as washing machines in the 1950s.

For many years Sally was a sales consultant for several companies that provided industrial and clerical temporary help in the Baltimore area. She was later named President of a small company that provided temporary employment for older adults. Sally was an active member of the Executive Women’s Network in Baltimore. In 2000 she was the recipient of the group’s Mandy Goetze Award for professional accomplishment.

Following the death of her husband in 2005, Sally moved to Acton to live with her daughter and son-in-law and soon became active in the Concord/Acton community. She was a member of the United Women’s Club of Concord and The Milldames. As a parishioner of Holy Family Parish in Concord, she attended Circle of Friends and the Monday Bible Study Group, where she was blessed with many wonderful friends and fond memories. Sally especially enjoyed her Friday bulletin-stuffing group at the church.

Sally is survived by many family and friends in both Maryland and Massachusetts. In addition to her professional and group interests, Sally was an avid fan of The Baltimore Orioles and later The Boston Red Sox. More than anything, Sally was enthusiastic and supportive about the hopes and goals of her children and friends. Sally saw no limitations in others, only possibilities.
