St. Matthew's Church Shows A Place at the Table

One quarter of children in the U.S. don’t know where their next meal is coming from. One in two children will be on food assistance sometime in their lives. Fifty million Americans have trouble feeding themselves and their families.

For decades, America has struggled with the problem of feeding hungry citizens. A new film, A Place at the Table, tells the stories of three Americans who routinely do not have enough to eat.

You are invited to view A Place at the Table on Friday, Sept. 27 at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, 435 Central Street, Acton.  The film begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free. A discussion with representatives from area food pantries and Acton Community Supper will follow.

A Place at the Table stars Jeff Bridges, who prompted the production of the film when he suggested to its producers that America can provide nutritious food to everyone.

“It’s about patriotism, really,” Bridges said.  “If another country was doing this to our children, we would be at war, and it doesn’t have to be that way.”

A Place at the Table examines a program from the 1960s that came close to ending hunger. The filmmakers maintain that could happen again if Americans decide that taking action is important to the nation.
