Unveiling & Stone Carving Demo at Charlotte's Garden

The ageless art of stone carving will become part of The Charlotte Sagoff Memorial Garden at the Acton Memorial Library on Saturday, September 29 at noon. The public is invited to an unveiling of a one-of-a-kind plaque at the garden that identifies its honoree, as well as a demonstration of the traditional art of stone carving by Houmann Oshidari, artist and stone carver.

Charlotte Sagoff was a long-time Acton resident, a lover of libraries and reading, an environmentalist who helped found Acton Citizens for Environmental Safety (ACES), and a stalwart community activist. Several years ago, her many local friends raised funds to establish Charlotte’s Garden.

Mr. Oshidari, a New Hampshire master stone carver, has rendered the text of the plaque on the basis of the handwriting of several of Charlotte’s friends, as well as that of her daughter. His medium is a slab of slate quarried in Vermont; the artist’s vision is realized the "old school" way — with hand tools.
