Not everyone will be able to enjoy a Christmas dinner this year, but one Acton business owner will try to make it happen for at least a few families in Acton and Sudbury.
Rose Saia, owner of The Local Table in West Acton, is offering meals to those in need ... specifically a Christmas dinner and cookies at no charge.
"We’d prepare the meals and they could pick them up to re-heat at home, or, if it is someone who is unable to get to the restaurant, we could deliver it," she said.
Saia was once a volunteer for Little Brothers and Friends of the Elderly. She would brink her kids to pick up a meal and visit with someone (a senior) for about an hour on Christmas day.
"It was quite an eye-opener for them," Saia said, "and despite having done this for years (and growing up in Boston) I would still be taken by suprise by empty fridges and cupboards."
Saia also recalls a certain Acton family who couldn't afford to heat their home.
"I was remembering how years back my family and the Merriam school principal helped a local family – it was a single parent raising three children who worked but had so little money they went without heat in the winter. Right here in Acton."
Saia's offer is quite simple: donate a few meals to families, seniors or whoever needs a warm meal on Christmas day. She will keep the names of those in need confidential.
"I would need to know that the family consented if another person recommended them," she said. "I was thinking of just asking for an email with the request and a short description of the current situation (not a lot). I can’t afford to make a lot of these, but I have learned that making a difference for a few people matters."
Dinners would be made in advance for pickup on or before the 22nd or 23rd.
Saia said the menu will likely consist of turkey, stuffing, potatoes and vegetables.
"But in a restaurant, you just never know (in a good way) what else we might be able to do," she said. "I think it will depend upon how many requests we get. We might also make honey glazed ham, potatoes, vegetable. I hope to include cookie trays or a pie."
