UPDATE: Johnny Rockets To Replace Friendly's - Acton

One greasy chain moves out and another moves in.

According to Acton's Building Commissioner, Frank Ramsbottom, word is Johnny Rockets will be filling the vacant spot where on 387 Massachusetts Avenue, Acton. The company that owns the building, Edens, confirmed Johnny Rockets is officially coming to Acton, but there is no official word as to when it will be open.

Ramsbottom said a permit was recently filed to work on the construction on the exterior of the building and a permit to remodel the interior is soon to come.

UPDATE (12:45 p.m.): According to Cozette Phifer-Koerber - VP, Brand Marketing/Communications for Johnny Rockets, "our hamburgers come with a choice of four protein options: ground beef, ground turkey, chicken breast or Boca burger. We also have a variety of salads available and are testing many, more healthful menu options."

So, what do you think?

I agree with Debra that the last thing we need is a burger/fries type of restaurant. It is sad to me to think that "family friendly" has come to mean only that kind of food. I would hope it is possible to be "family friendly" and healthy!

"One greasy chain moves out and another moves in. " Don't we already have enough editorializing from the MSM? Report the news - don't make moral judgements in your headlines!
Chris Schaffner June 27, 2012 at 03:03 PM
Those are the facts. No moral judgement needed.
Chris Schaffner June 27, 2012 at 03:05 PM
You are the one making moral judgements by assuming "greasy"=bad. For many, myself included, "greasy" can be a positive attribute. If I'm having a burger, it better be greasy.
Chris Schaffner June 27, 2012 at 03:07 PM
Wouldn't even need to brew their own - they could partner with existing local brewers.

You intend to feed your kids this food? High calories, awful for them. And a little birdie told me (not the one below) your kids don't eat meat ;P
Jason Fitzgerald June 27, 2012 at 04:01 PM
Should open one yourself man. #PartyBackOn!
Holly June 27, 2012 at 04:04 PM
YUM Greasy! MMMM milkshakes! And I believe they have grilled cheese for my non-meat eating kids. You can eat healthy at home. Eating out is supposed to be fun and delicious :)
Jason Fitzgerald June 27, 2012 at 04:07 PM
On the fence, I guess. I agree that the food here is not healthy, but I'm not planning on eating here every day. I'll probably go as often as I went to Friendly's, and I knew I wasn't eating light there. It'll be a "treat" place, and better than an empty store front. O'Naturals was healthy, but it couldn't sustain the costs of Acton... Before it's time, perhaps?

Not to worry about a greasy burger. The Onion newspaper reported years ago that the cow is actually a vegetable. It absorbs moisture through its hooves and conducts photosynthesis through its hide. Vegetarians and vegans, enjoy as the juice runs down your little fingers to your wrists! Reverend E. Raleigh Pimperton III

I always loved going to Friendly's but it was time for them to bow out, new blood is needed and Johnny Rocket's is a good choice.

Ughhh! I'm with Birdie that a brewpub would have been great. We need better options for restaurants in Acton... And I don't consider Johnny Rockets a good option.
Steve Jackson June 27, 2012 at 06:29 PM
Brewpub would be great, but not there. That parking lot and alcohol would not mix well.
james barrette June 27, 2012 at 08:14 PM
it may be a chain, but at least it's a decent chain. The headline should be "One grease stain moves out so a real burger joint can move in".

couldn't agree more
Holly June 28, 2012 at 12:23 AM
And a brew pub is not kid friendly...and there is one right in Westford.
Nancy Shaw June 28, 2012 at 12:23 AM
Glad the space is no longer a vacancy. I think it fits in well with the kinds of businesses that are already there. The former Skupps building would be perfect for a brewpub.
Chris Schaffner June 28, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Acton is too "kid friendly" already. There is a reason parents move after their last child graduates A/B. We need more "sophisticated adult friendly" places. Some place I could go with my wife, without the kids, that is not 30 miles away.
kelly June 28, 2012 at 02:41 PM
couldn't agree more with the comment below (chris schaffner). my husband and i moved to acton within the past year, and although we absolutely love living here, the lack of "adult friendly" venues is kind of a bummer. "not your average joe's" is probably the most "sophisticated" dining spot for couples our age (late 30's/early 40's) sans kids. and even at that, if you can't get a seat at the bar - which is small - then you're sort of out of luck. if you're a fan of italian food, bella famiglia (http://www.bellafamigliainc.com/) has potential. we are not fans, however! although, their pizzas ARE quite tasty. i would love to see a place like aka bistro (http://www.akabistrolincoln.com/) open in acton, or even a legal seafoods. al fresco dining would be a HUGE plus as well. i commute into boston every day, so the last thing i want to do when i get home is get BACK into the car to go "someplace nice". to have a more upscale, adult-friendly restaurant close to home would be (for lack of a better word), AWESOME.
kelly June 28, 2012 at 08:49 PM
sidenote regarding johnny rockets: i've eaten at one once, and that was at the flamingo in las vegas, at 2am, after a 6 hour flight from boston when nothing else was open. oops -make that twice; the first time was at the mohegan sun, at 2 am, after many cocktails and nothing else was open. inevitably, on both occasions, i ended up hating myself in the morning. so yes, totally wishing a different restaurant was occupying the space.
Lauren June 28, 2012 at 09:53 PM
You're right Steve!
Lauren June 28, 2012 at 09:56 PM
I'm with Chris on this one!

Jenna, your comments were removed from the site because direct insults are against Patch terms. We appreciate you jumping in with your opinion, but there are other ways to get your point across without calling people names.

I agree totally with Nancy's comment. It is a great location for a teen type place. The old Scupper Jack's is the perfect place for an"adult" restaurant : is there any way to entice someone to open one there?
N R December 08, 2012 at 06:28 PM
A Faux diner. Just like Friendly's, an unimaginative place for " mall rats" with institutional food, and unlike real diners, no breakfast. High calorie, high fat menu, a 50s' menu without the 50's prices , Acton doesn't need another restaurant that doesn't serve breakfast. At least there's Julie's place down the street
Stephen January 14, 2013 at 01:17 AM
Johnny rockets will be serving a full breakfast menu. It is good revenue for the town and the owners of the franchise are doing everything possible to be community friendly. Give them a chance before you past judgement. You would all want the same if you were trying to start a business. Remember this is not a corporate owned location.
Jason Fitzgerald January 14, 2013 at 02:49 AM
Open up already! I am dying for a milkshake! Seriously though, seeing the facade being completed has piqued my appetite.
Diane Bennett January 30, 2013 at 12:05 AM
I worked for Friendly's at this same location. In Acton it was not easy! A lot of entitled children acting how ever they wanted with parents approval. I wish them luck. Is it something I would consider again absolutely! But I am not 100% sure the body could still handle the fast pace.
