MathWorks Renews Partnership with The Discovery Museums

MathWorks of Natick, MA has renewed their partnership with The Discovery Museums of Acton, MA to bring the museums’ Traveling Science Workshops (TSW) program to elementary and middle schools for 2013-2014. Now in its 21st year, TSW is a state curriculum-based program that brings hands-on science and STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) concepts into K-8 classrooms throughout New England. This is the fourth consecutive year that MathWorks has underwritten the program.

Traveling Science Workshops serve more than 26,000 students per year and is the only classroom-based program of its kind in the Commonwealth. Science concepts come to life through a set of 18 age-appropriate workshop topics that support Massachusetts curriculum standards and STEM initiatives. Topics include Light & Lasers, Sound, Static Electricity, Magnets, Green Energy, Flight, Electromagnetism, Simple Machines, Weather and Bubbles. Fun, hands-on discovery activities demystify science concepts, strengthen problem solving skills, and reinforce the scientific method. Classroom teachers and parents receive follow-up activities to reinforce learned concepts.

“MathWorks supports The Discovery Museums’ Traveling Science Workshops because we believe it is important and exciting to spark children’s interest in science, technology, engineering and math,” said Jeanne O’Keefe, senior vice president and CFO of MathWorks. “Working hands-on to experience the science concepts that are in the world all around us can make a real and lasting impact on young minds.”

“Kids are natural scientists, inventors and creators—the trick is not to squeeze those instincts out of them as they grow up,” said Neil Gordon, CEO of The Discovery Museums. “MathWorks’ generous sponsorship of our Traveling Science Workshops enables more kids to experience science by doing rather than just watching or reading about it. That makes all the difference in encouraging them and building confidence around STEM.”
