The Sudbury Villagers Club's next meeting will be held Thursday, February 7th at Sudbury's Goodnow Library's Community Room at 9:30 am. The meeting will start with refreshments and Maxine Yarbrough, a longtime Sudbury resident, will speak at 10:00am on the Underground Railroad in Sudbury.
This Underground Railroad was an informal network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th Century Black slaves in the United States to escape to Canada with the aid of abolitionists. Between 1810 and 1860, it is believed that over 30,000 people escaped enslavement via this network. In Sudbury, four safe houses provided runaways with refuge from handsomely paid "slave catchers".
A short business meeting will follow Maxine's talk. The monthly meetings are open to the public and we especially invite women who would like to know more about our club to join us to learn about our club by attending a meeting. The meetings are usually held at the Goodnow Library which is located at 21 Concord Road, just north of the Boston Post Road (US Rte #20) near Sudbury's business center with ample parking in the rear.
