Tour of the Morrison Farm

Join members of the Morrison Farm Committee this Saturday, October 12 at 3 p.m. for a site walk of the town-owned farm land.  This is the last of our planned series of walks, but of course, the land is open and available for exploration whenever it is convenient for you.  Please share this information with friends and neighbors who might be interested as well!

The Morrison Farm Committee is planning for improvements that will make this already beautiful and historic piece of land even better suited for people to enjoy nature and appreciate Acton’s history.  The Morrison land was purchased by a vote at Town Meeting in 1997 for $1.7 M.  It now supports a healthy community garden, a new orchard, meadows that are a haven to many wildlife species and a fantastic community of birds. None of these areas will be changed. The committee plans to have a boardwalk/path built along the edge of Ice House Pond so that the area can be more accessible for hikes, fishing and contemplation. While we investigate how to best use the existing barn and farmhouse, we are interested in preserving two other historic elements on the property: Robbins Farm cellar hole (where the alarm was raised for Acton on April 19, 1775), and the remains of the old ice house foundation (part of Acton’s early industry). The back portion of the land is a pine forest that will stay intact.  The committee plans to have this area designated as conservation land so it cannot be disturbed by later generations.

The Morrison Farm is located at 116 Concord Road, between the Woodlawn Cemetery and Ice House Pond.  Walks are open to all, but walkers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes.  Parking is available at Ice House Pond, or behind the barn on the property.
