The Planet Chillers' Journey Begins

A little over a year ago, Hurricane Sandy struck the Northeast with pounding forces. Although this event only lost my Massachusetts home power for a week, it hurt my family in New Jersey even more.  They lost power for two weeks and the storm caused damage in their neighborhood. It hit others even harder, who lost their homes and even the lives of their loved ones. After reading articles about this super-storm, I learned that this cost the government billions of dollars, and still counting. But why did Sandy happen? After analyzing the effects of the hurricane, it was led back to one environmental issue, Global warming.

I am a part of The Planet Chillers, a group of middle school students, who are raising awareness for how our food choices affect the environment. When someone thinks about global warming, they view a truck rolling down the highway or a factory spewing out carbon dioxide but many don’t see that the hamburger on their dinner plate is a major contributor to global warming.  98% of the meat sold in supermarkets comes from non-environmental friendly livestock farms.  Events like Sandy serve as a wake-up call for all of us.  So what can we do to address this issue and what should we do before it is too late? I will keep this blog updated weekly to make you more familiar about the dangers of the livestock industry, and what we can do as a community to make our planet healthier and eco-friendlier.
