Brandeis Student Bit By Animal, Possibly A Coyote

A coyote may have bit a college student in Waltham on Dec. 12.

A Brandeis University student was bit by an animal on Wednesday, Dec. 12 in what a university official said could have been a coyote.

"This morning, university police received a report of a student being bitten by an animal, possibly a coyote in the vicinity of Ziv Quad and the Shapiro Campus Center. The student is undergoing medical treatment as a result of this incident," Brandeis University Director of Public Safety Edward M. Callahan wrote in a Dec. 12 email to the campus.

A university spokesman confirmed that email was sent and referred further questions to Callahan. Callahan could not be immediately reached.

Waltham residents tweeted sightings of a pack of coyotes in the Forest Street area on Wednesday night. Also, animal control officials have previously reported other sighting in the city and warned of how to deal with them.

we live across the river from Brandeis. we have personally seen tons of coyotes, and their feeding frenzy barking wakes us at night. they are numerous in volume, and numbers increase year after year ... weak winters, and no natural predators around - no hunting allowed (bow hunters should be welcome)! Weston has the right idea to control their deer population.

There is now a sign at the entrance to Mt. Feake Cemetery: "Caution - coyotes in area." Might be time for some more info about what to do, exactly, if confronted.
