Acton Health Director Issues Heat Advisory for Residents This Week

The temperatures are on the rise this week, making safety a top priority, especially for the elderly and those with respiratory ailments.

With temperatures approaching the upper 90s this week, a heat wave is about to hit New England, and Acton Health Director Doug Halley is offering some important tips for residents to beat the heat.

“Public places like the library are always going to have good air conditioning, so try to stay in the air conditioning whenever possible this week,” Halley said. Halley suggests using fans or anything else to reduce body temperature.

For the elderly who might be more susceptible to heat, the Council on Aging is another place to seek shelter and air conditioning away from the high-90s temperatures. Halley also suggests going to a friend or relative’s house if one doesn’t already own an air conditioner. Those with asthma and other respiratory illnesses are also at a high risk for being a victim of the high temperatures.

“Seek shade, seek breeze, anything at all for temperature relief,” Halley said. “Seniors often go to the mall for their walking. Malls will be air-conditioned too.”

Overall, Halley’s tips emphasize common sense, he said. “Make sure you’re hydrated, stay out of the sun.”

If one is feeling faint or dehydrated, Halley said to call the police or dial 911. In case of a dire heat emergency, the Emergency Operating Center at the Public Safety Facility is there to offer residents a way to stay out of the hot sun.

Halley also advocated for the use of the shuttle service available in town. “Dial-A-Ride is a good way to get to a cool, air conditioned location as well.”
