It was a tale of two halves in Acton on Saturday as the Acton-Boxborough girls basketball teamoutscored Lowell, 31-22, in the second half en route to a, 47-44, victory.
"In the second half we were more aggressive," said A-B Head Coach Kim Landry. "I think Elizabeth (Belanger) really keyed our run there making some key shots."
Lowell led, 22-16, at the half and outplayed the Colonials down the stretch of the first. The RedRaiders would score the final seven points heading into the halftime break, including three freethrows as time expired.
A-B would come out firing in the second half as Belanger scored 11 of her game high 23 pointsin the third quarter comeback and gave A-B a, 35-28, lead after three quarters.
The fourth quarter was full of back and forth action as Lowell crept back into the game andtrailed by three points, 44-41 with under a minute remaining. Belanger would hit her biggest shot of the game (see video) with 47 seconds remaining in the game as the junior drained a three pointer to extend the A-B lead to six.
"She is a big time player," said Landry. "That is what kids like that do."
A-B also got some clutch shooting from senior point guard, Mary Murphy. Murphy hit three critical 3-point baskets, banking all of them in off the glass.
“She is a senior, she is a captain and she is tough,” said Landry of Murphy. “We needed her to make shots and she did.”
A-B senior captain Hannah Foley also chipped in with seven points and contributed some steady defense in the second half.
A-B will play the winner of Revere and Lincoln-Sudbury for a chance to advance to the TD Garden in Boston and play in the Division 1 North finals.
