Lady Colonials Earn Dramatic Overtime Win, Reach State Semifinal

The locals trailed for much of the game but came all the way back and won in the extra session.

It took a dramatic comeback, but the Acton-Boxborough girls hockey team's state championship hopes are still alive.

The top-seeded Colonials trailed No. 8 Barnstable by a 4-2 margin in the second period of the Division 1 quarterfinal round on Tuesday night, but came storming back to force overtime.

It was during that extra session that senior Eleana Cardarelli scored the game-winning goal just over one minute in to help the locals advance.

“I know when I was in front of the net, the puck just kind of popped out and I just hit it,” Cardarelli told the Boston Herald.

Thanks to the victory, Acton-Boxborough advanced to the Division 1 semifinal game. That contest is slated for Sunday at 4:30 p.m. on the ice of Stoneham Arena against either Watertown/Belmont or Duxbury.

The winner of that tilt will advance to the state championship game, which will be held on the ice of TD Garden.
