A pre-K through grade 12 merger proposal for Acton and Boxborough has received the backing of the town's three school committees after month's of changes. In a May 2 joint meeting of the Acton-Boxborough Regional School Committee, the Acton Public School Committee and Boxborough School Committee that was taped on May 2 by ActonTV, all three agreed to the most recently changed plan and to present it to Special Town Meeting in both communities on June 3. The merger would go into affect on July 1, 2014, if it passes at Special Town Meeting, and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education support the plan. This, in spite of Acton-Boxborough's No. 9 ranking in Boston Magazine's 2012 list of the top 20 high schools in Boston and the Boston suburbs. Acton-Boxborough also failed to rank in US News' top 500 high schools nationally. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. These rankings are always more about selling magazines then providing useful information, but one basic piece of information is missing from this article : did the A-B school administration even participate in this "survey" ? Readak's advanced study skills, critical reading courses available to students entering grades six through 12.
Acton parents trying to give their students extra help in and out of the classroom have a new tool to use, and it's being offered right in their backyard. Readak Educational Services is holding a special “Back-to-School Bootcamp” in the classroom at their offices at 36 Knox Trail, Suite 102. Typically available only to students enrolled in private schools, this is a unique opportunity for any student to take advantage of the Readak course. Teacher Ralph Arabian's class is creating boats in shop class, with plans to race them on May 15.
Acton-Boxborough teacher Ralph Arabian is close to completing a project with his students students. They are building boats in the school's wood shop and will race them across at Nara Park on May 15. The regatta will include numerous races, a tug-of-war and more.

Acting Assistant Secretary Michael Yudin visited Acton-Boxborough Regional High School on May 2, paying tribute to the school districts as a 2013 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools District Sustainability Awardee. The Acton districts were saluted for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics, STEM and green career pathways. Yudin observed an Advanced Placement Environmental Science class at Acton-Boxborough, then took a tour of the school while accompanied by students from the Resource Force program and Recycling Club. Police say there was no threat after completing a search of the high school.
Acton-Boxborough Regional High School dismissed its students early today due to a bomb threat, the Boston Globe reports. Several threatening messages were found in one of the girls bathrooms, Acton Police Chief Francis Wilmayer told the Globe. After completing a search, the Acton PD determined there was no danger. Bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in to continue the search, Widmayer told the Globe.
