This weekend, the final three performances of Proscenium Circus’ production will take place at ABRHS.
In recent years, Proscenium Circus has presented a number of well-acted shows – The Laramie Project and Our Town, to name two — that were not marketed as being appropriate for all ages. Even last fall’s rendition of Robin Hood had a disclaimer attached to its publicity: the sword fighting is realistic, and may frighten young children. There is no such warning accompanying the high school theater group’s current production of Charlotte’s Web. The well-known story is told in a delightful, fast-paced manner. There exist moments of sadness as the characters confront their own mortality, and elements of danger are ever-present, but these are balanced with equal measures of glee and humor. Proscenium Circus head Linda Potter chose the show with…

Why would a Facebook group titled "Don't Buy RJ Grey Lunch" get 1,110 hits?
Upon arriving home after his first day of school, RJ Grey, eighthgrader Michael Gecawicz headed to the kitchen to fix a second lunch for himself. Then he sat down at his computer. While this may be standard routine for many 13 year-old boys, Michael said he was exceptionally hungry that day, even after buying and eating lunch at school. And his motivation for logging on: creating a Facebook group called “Don’t Buy RJ Grey Lunch.” Michael, who purchased lunch at school every day as a seventhgrader, was reacting to changes he observed in the lunchroom since June. “All the snacks and juices I used to get were gone,” he said. “The food quantities have gone down. And the prices have gone up.” Classmate Connor Cates said, “They took away most of…

In response to this past summer’s fatal drug overdose of one local teenager and a serious accident involving two others, a good portion of last week’s school committee meeting was dedicated to understanding the resources available for stuggling students.
Anyone who pays attention to the news realizes that high school students are at an elevated risk of suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, and injuries due to car accidents. For four years, ABRHS Principal Dr. Alixe Callen’s fervent wish that her students would stay safe was, for the most part, granted. But Callen, who has worked in other school systems where tragedies have occurred and who witnessed former students act as pall bearers for a classmate, was saddened once again when Acton lost a member of the Class of 2011 and two local students were hospitalized after a serious car accident. Last week, Callen joined Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Mills, Director of Pupil Services Liza Huber, and local Youth Officer Keith Campbell as the …

Acton students log a great deal of time doing homework. Is this time well spent?
NOTE: This article was originally published on Patch in 2011 but we wanted to re-feature the article because it is an interesting topic of conversation since the new school year is soon to begin. In March, the documentary Race to Nowhere was shown at the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. In the audience were approximately 750 parents, students and other interested locals. The film addresses what its director, Vicki Abeles, feels is the current state of affairs for our children: overscheduling, unrealistic demands to perform, lack of adequate sleep, competition in all areas, and intense pressure to position oneself to gain acceptance to prestigious colleges. Within a week of the film’s showing, parent, Alex Horovitz, penned a …
