State Sen. Jamie Eldridge says Gov. Deval Patrick's revenue proposal will help more residents be able to pay bills and better handle financial struggles.
Gov. Patrick’s growth agenda goes to bold lengths to move our Commonwealth forward and invest in the future of our communities. We can’t afford to watch from the sidelines as our roads, bridges and public transportation systems decline, nor can we turn a blind eye to the rising cost of higher education that is deterring tomorrow's bright minds from following their dreams. The years of cuts to Chapter 70 education funding, special education, regional school transportation and local aid have hurt the quality of education in our schools and divided residents in each community. Gov. Patrick has proposed to change that with a revenue proposal that is fair and progressive by shifting the burden of taxes from working families to the wealthy, …

The state senator was recently recognized for his work to expand supportive housing.
State Sen. Jamie Eldridge's busy month of February is concluding with an award. Earlier this week he received the “Big Cookie” award at the annual Homes for Families Advocacy Day at the State House for his efforts to increase funding for supportive housing and end restrictions placed on access to shelter for homeless families across Massachusetts. “I was deeply humbled to receive this special recognition at the Homes for Families Advocacy Day and take immense pride in continuing to fight for greater access to permanent housing and better services to reduce homelessness,” Eldridge said in a release. Homes for Families highlighted its Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP), the state’s rental assistance program that helps extremely low …

State Sen. Jamie Eldridge joins half of senate as a co-sponsor of recycling legislation.
First the Town of Concord passed a plastic water bottle bill, and now the rest of the state is trying to jump on board. In a sign that the Updated Bottle Bill has gained greater momentum for passage than ever this session, 95 legislators signed on as a co-sponsor of the Updated Bottle Bill earlier this week, including half of the Massachusetts State Senate. “More than ever, legislators realize that the time to act and finally pass the Updated Bottle Bill is now,” State Sen. Jamie Eldridge, a strong supporter and co-sponsor of the bill, said in a release. “Updating the Bottle Bill is a common sense law that would help increase recycling and reduce litter in our parks, along our roads and in our streams. Passing this bill has been one of …

Movement is to announce constitutional amendments overturning Citizens United.
A joint effort by State Sen. Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton) and U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision in the Citizens United case and call for an end to corporate political spending took place on Thursday in Boston and Worcester. Labeled a “People’s Rights” tour, the two politicians showed support for two new constitutional amendments filed by McGovern. "When corporate dollars influence politics, the American people don't have a place at the table to express their principles and voice,” said Eldridge in a statement. “The new legislation proposed by Congressman McGovern would make it clear that First Amendment rights are for people, not corporations, making sure that corporate special interest money stops drowning out …

Legislation spurred on by the death of a Hudson dog named Phantom would protect animals in abandoned buildings.
A Marlborough resident's efforts to find justice for a lab that died after being abandoned in a foreclosed property have culminated with the filing of a bill to protect animals in similar situations. "This is the bill that I want. I have been praying for this bill for two years and I am very, very happy ... I want this law passed. I don’t want this to happen to any other dogs," said Lyn Gorka, a local real estate agent and animal rights advocate, who had spoken out for such a bill after being moved by the story of the 2 year-old Phantom that died after being abandoned in a foreclosed apartment. Gorka said abandoned animals in foreclosed properties is ongoing and being reported by other brokers throughout the region. "I want this to be …

I want to thank all of the residents who attended any one of the four Town Hall meetings that I held over the past month, after my re-election in November. I was pleased with the concerns expressed by my constituents, as well as the positive discussions that were generated out of these conversations. The Town Hall meetings were held in Ayer, Westborough, Marlborough, and Acton, to ensure that residents from each geographical area of the fourteen communities of the Middlesex and Worcester District had the opportunity to attend a meeting and express their opinions on legislative and budgetary concerns. The topics raised at the meetings included increasing local aid, transportation infrastructure improvements, reducing unfunded mandates, …

It’s the beginning of a new year, a time for reflecting on the previous year. This year, we don't have to look too far back to recognize one of the year’s pivotal struggles to protect children’s health. In fact, it reached its climax on New Year’s Eve in the mostly empty halls of our legislature. A weak bill that would have accomplished little itself and prevented future efforts to reduce our exposure to toxic mercury was stalled, thanks to the leadership of some very committed legislators including Senators Jamie Eldridge and Sonia Chang-Diaz and Representatives Ellen Story and Frank Smizik. These heroes recognized that passing this bill would land Massachusetts with the weakest bill of its kind in the country, and we thank them for …
