For those who weren't able to make it down to Concord for Tuesday night's League of Women Voters 14th Middlesex House of Representatives debate between Rep. Corey Atkins (D-Concord) and Michael Benn (R-Concord), here are the key points from both candidates answers on the evening's questions. What Laws Should Be Enacted To Help Job Creation? Atkins: The state already done many things, such as freezing the unemployment insurance rate and streamlining permitting. Massachusetts hasn't raised taxes in three years, and it has lowered taxes more in the past ten years than any other state. Things like spending on infrastructure and emerging technology funds are also important. Benn: The key is to unshackle the business community and lower taxes …

Bottle deposits are a tremendously effective tool, and not because it increases recycling. When I grew up in NH, without bottle deposits, soda bottles and beer cans littered the roadways. Looking around Acton, one sees almost no deposit eligible containers as litter, and those that do get dumped, quickly disappear when some enterprising individual picks them up for the deposit. In fact when I see…   more ›

It seems to me that we need more balance on Beacon Hill. The obvious point is the past, and from news reports apparent continuing, corruption from the Democrats. Less obvious is that when only 20% of the House and 10% of the Senate come from the minority party, what kind of compromise is even possible? There are so few Republicans that roll-call votes are not even required. Where is the …   more ›

SOUND OFF: How Political Should You Get With Facebook Friends?

As the Nov. 6 election nears, political discussion is getting heated. How much do you share of your political opinions with your Facebook friends?

Maybe you're a die-hard Democrat, and you think Joe Biden wiped the floor with Paul Ryan in the vice presidential debate Thursday. Or maybe you're a staunch Republican, and you believe Paul Ryan was on top of his game. Do you share these opinions with your Facebook friends? Maybe you shouldn't, suggests a recent article on Boston.com. People of all political leanings told the Globe they're learning too much about their friends' and relatives' attitudes. The article is informed by data from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. The study found that 18 percent of Facebook users have blocked, unfriended, or hidden a friend because of political differences or a distaste for the sheer volume of the friends’ political posts…

These are very good questions, ones that I ponder on a daily basis. I usually err on the side of not posting anything myself that may be viewed in a negative light by "friends." And I refrain from commenting on things I disagree with 99% of the time. If I can't help myself I try very hard to frame my comment in a way that won't offend the poster. It is interesting to read others' posts, however; …   more ›

Tsongas, Republican Opponents, Speak Out on Akin’s “Legitimate Rape” Comments

Incumbent Congresswoman Niki Tsongas and her two Republican challengers were united in their disagreement with Missouri Congressman Todd Akin’s statement on “legitimate rape,” but the two parties different in other ways on how they saw the comment.

The statement of Congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin (R-Missouri) relating to “legitimate rape” last Sunday has spread to the Bay State, where the three candidates for the Massachusetts Third Congressional District have chimed in with their reactions to the controversy. Incumbent Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell) made no equivocations in her disagreement to Akin’s views, tying them to other Republicans, including GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan. “Congressman Akin's statements about "legitimate rape" deserve to be condemned.  Unfortunately, they are no surprise to those of us who serve in the Congress,” said Tsongas. “Earlier in this Congress, they pushed for legislation to deny aid to hospitals that perform abortions even to save…

Bottle Bill Dies in Conference Committee

Legislators decide to take the bottle bill amendment out of the jobs act.

The bottle bill will not make it to the governor's desk this year.  The controversial proposal was included as an amendment to the Senate jobs bill but scrapped Monday in conference committee, according to an aide to its sponsor, Sen. Robert Hedlund (R-Weymouth). The jobs bill is expected to be laid before Gov. Deval Patrick Tuesday, the last day of the legislative session. The amendment had faced strong opposition in the House, with Speaker Robert DeLeo describing it as a tax. Hedlund disputed this view, saying that taxes can't be redeemed.  The expansion to the 31-year-old law designed to promote recycling and reduce litter would have added plastic bottles used for water, juices, iced tea and sports drinks to the list of containers …

House Rejects Governor Patrick's 'Three-Strikes' Amendment

The governor on Saturday sent 'Melissa's Bill' back to the Legislature.

Gov. Deval Patrick set in motion a wave of criticism when he proposed an amendment to the "three strikes"/Melissa's Bill on the grounds it lacked sufficient provisions for judicial discretion.  Warning of possible unintended "unjust consequences" that can arise from mandatory sentencing laws, Patrick wrote in a letter to the Legislature, "None of us is wise or prescient enough to foresee each and every circumstance in which the new habitual offender provisions may apply." On Monday afternoon, the House rejected Patrick's amendment by a vote of 132-23, according to The Boston Globe. The bill's fate is up in the air, as the legislature's summer session will end Tuesday at midnight. The governor has not indicated whether he would veto a crime…

By now, Citizens can no longer expect our Gov'nor to do the right thing by us. Like his buddy Obama, Patrick doesn't seem to like law-abiding tax-paying Americans very much. Why else would he keep refusing to protect us? Last year he refused to sign us onto the Secure Communities program – which seeks to deport the most violent and dangerous illegals. He said it was 'racist'. Then he refused to …   more ›
