High School Quiz Show, WGBH’s Emmy-Award winning fast-paced academic game show, announced the taping schedule for the 2012 tournament bracket for the 16 Massachusetts public high school academic teams competing on season three of the show. Acton-Boxborough will take on Hingham in the first round, and taping is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11:15 a.m. The show will aire Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m. on WGBH 2. WGBH’s award-winning academic show is hosted by Billy Costa. All shows are taped in front of a studio audience at WGBH, One Guest Street in Brighton. Sixteen Massachusetts public high school academic teams have advanced to compete on season four of High School Quiz Show, WGBH’s academic quiz show hosted by Billy Costa, premiering Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. on WGBH 2. The show’s production team announced the 16 schools on High School Quiz Show’s Facebook page earlier today. Teams qualified by earning top scores on “Super Sunday,” an event at which registered school teams each took an identical 100-question oral quiz at WGBH Studios in Brighton. After being eliminated in the first round of competition last year, the current team made it to the quarterfinals before falling to their counterparts from Rockport High School in a match televised on April 15, 2012.
Senior John Russell is one of nine ABRHS students who joined a school organization that, by its nature, demanded that they perform voluntary academic work each week. In addition to homework assigned by their teachers, John and fellow Acton-Boxborough Trivia Team members researched facts about a wide range of topics and brought related questions to twice-weekly group meetings. There, they tested one another’s knowledge about a wide range of subjects including literature, history, science, sports, and film. “It may sound like work, but it’s really a minimal time commitment,” John said of the hour-long, rapid-fire quiz sessions. ABRHS Principal Dr. Alixe Callen could use a clone about now. Despite being out six of seven evenings last week, she wasn’t able to witness all the athletic match-ups and competitions on her calendar. In an email to parents this past Monday, Callen called her students’ success “unbelievable” and explained why it was just too much to ask her overscheduled staff to provide bus transportation and supervision to students who want to see their peers compete at out-of-town locations. “I do hope that families will consider attending together,” she wrote. Sunday, Feb. 26, the WGBH High School Quiz Show matchup between Acton-Boxborough and Beverly High School aired. Acton-Boxborough beat Beverly and moved on to the second round and will face the winner of Rockport and Somerville High, which will air Sunday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m. on WGBH 2.
