Regardless of what is planned for Kelly's corner, West Acton wouldn't need much to become a wonderful village because of what it already has. It just looks so tired and ignored, which it is. Retail business and private development cannot completely shoulder the burden to re-vitalize it. It can develop further and look wonderful without major investment, in my opinion.

ReplyKathy, I wonder how so many individuals could have provided this information to me, including stakeholders in Kelly's corner? Aside from this, why is West Acton Village ignored by the town for funding to improve it cosmetically and functionally? I ask this as a stakeholder there. It already has a large established residential population, a senior community, sidewalks, a playground, a theatre, churches, a bank, Idlylwilde farm, food choices, a pharmacy, a pre-school, the farmer's market in the summer, elementary schools...with a little attention, it could be the gem of the town!

Reply$277,000 is a lot of money for an area which seems to be well on a path to be a big box retail corner. There is already a village in Acton and it is in West Acton. I wonder if the vision for Kelly's Corner needs to be re-considered given the traffic congestion, lack of sidewalks and emergence of SubWay, Super Stop and Shop and Panera. Why not invest in an area that could be a wonderful historic village that already has a theatre, churches, food choices, a summer farmer's market and many residences?

The ScupperJack's building was available for lease. It is a large space with a high monthly lease, so my guess is only a large, chain restaurant could afford it. These restaurants typically want high traffic areas off the highway or in malls, so that location may not have gotten their attentiion. When I was looking to open a restaurant over two years ago, I called the listing broker for the McDonald's building and they didn't return my calls. I was told (by another broker) that it is owned/leased along with KMart and there was interest by Stop n'Shop in putting a super Stop n'Shop there once the Kmart lease expired. This is heresay, of course. The people in town involved with the development of Kelly's corner may have correct information.

ReplyI wish this new restaurant hadn't violated the local sign laws that other businesses abide by. They put several signs all over town, illegally, to advertise their opening. This hurts the local, independent restaurants in town who are trying to make it so there are choices in Acton. Acton's restaurants include many small/family businesses: Crossroads, Il Forno, Le Lyonnaise, Sprigs, The Local Table, Monsoon, Benjarong, Spice Pepper Garden, Bueno Y Sano. There is certainly room for more; let's welcome those who honor the bylaws of the town.

ReplyI hope your voice is heard by the town planners since many of your thoughts are shared by other residents. I hope our paths cross in town!

What a great memory and thanks for sharing it. Acton did have coffee in town 20 years ago but the Sunday morning I went out at 6:30am to get two hot cups I was unsuccessful! That might be true today as well since I am not a fan of DD coffee!

ReplyI would love to see the West Acton district developed into a town "center". It is the only area in Acton with this potential and it would add so much value to the community. It would also give residents a wonderful walking district. It needs municipal parking and some interesting retail offerings to make it a true destination.

Thanks for providing the link. This at least settles the confusion regarding Panera in Acton. I wonder how, or if, this fits into the vision/plan for Kelly's corner? The amount of traffic in/out it will be significant, and, that is a congested area already.
